Personal finance guides

The West Virginia State Auditor’s Office, in collaboration with the Department of Education, has updated personal finance instructional guides from Teach21 with the Next Generation (NxG) CSOs.

Please visit http://www.wvsao.gov/SecuritiesCommission/Education/MoneyMatters.aspx, where you will find curricula that immerse middle and high school students in personal finance principals, while applying Next Generation Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies CSOs, and 21st Century Skills.

All instructional guides include vocabulary, research, and projects for discussion.  A free visit by WVSAO staff can be scheduled to offer students a culminating Money Matters presentation which includes a fun and interactive Stock Market Game and/or Corporation Game.

Note to WV FBLA-PBL chapters: A free online stock market game curriculum is available for chapters to earn participation points for the spring conference in Charleston.  The game is already underway, and it is not too late to join the competition.

Here is a quick breakdown of the themes for each of the classroom instructional guides:

5th Grade: It’s not what you buy; it’s where you buy it! – Students utilize NxG CSOs to learn about needs and wants, pricing, and comparison shopping.

6th Grade: Who Makes the Flakes? – Students learn budgeting (math) skills such as saving money by lowering unit price.  They are also introduced to corporate competition.

7th Grade: Hey Pop, who’s your daddy? – The capstone task is to research and discuss corporate brands by looking at the soda pop industry.

8th Grade: Is it a markup, or a markdown? – Students research soda pop companies as potential investors.  Credit Cards are introduced.

9th Grade: Don’t go it alone, mutual funds are what to own! – Students learn the basics about mutual funds, and are introduced to the concept of investment diversification.

10th Grade: Time (and money) is on your side! – Time value of money and budgeting are the core of long term planning, and are the focus of this exercise.

11th Grade: What to know before you owe. – Credit Cards are highlighted in the debt discussion.  Students will comparison shop credit card offers and determine costs and benefits.

12th Grade: Who are you? – This program focuses on the dangers of fraud and identity theft.  An online program takes a student into the world of an investment scam, and a worksheet asks students to think carefully about social media and protecting personal information.

C3 Framework

C3-Framework-for-Social-Studies final copy

It seems that there is some confusion out in the field about the C3 Framework for social studies.  This document is not common core standards for social studies.  This Framework does not include all that can or should be included in a set of robust social studies standards, and intentionally preserves the critical choices around the selection of curricular content taught at each grade level as a decision best made by each state. The Framework aims to support states in creating standards that prepare young people for effective and successful participation in college, careers, and civic life.

However, this is a great resource for social studies teachers.  The C3 Framework is centered on an Inquiry Arc—a set of interlocking and mutually supportive ideas that frame the ways students learn social studies content. By focusing on inquiry, the framework emphasizes the disciplinary concepts and practices that support students as they develop the capacity to know, analyze, explain, and argue about interdisciplinary challenges in our social world. It includes descriptions of the structure and tools of the disciplines, as well as the habits of mind common in those disciplines

Take time to look at the  document because it is something that all teachers of Social Studies, or those creating PD for social studies, grades k-12 should review.  C# Framework Document:  C3-Framework-for-Social-Studies final copy

WV History Bowl

On behalf of Joe Geiger, WV Archives and History

Dear Educator:

I am writing to inform you that the dates and locations for the 2014 West Virginia History Bowl regional competitions have been set, and to extend an invitation to participate in this exciting event. As most of you know, History Bowl is an academic competition for eighth grade students in West Virginia sponsored by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. Last year, 165 teams from 49 counties competed in the events. Each team is composed of four students, and each school may enter two teams. Eight regional competitions will be held around the state in early 2014, with the first and second place teams in each region advancing to the state tournament, which will be held at the Culture Center in Charleston on April 29, 2014. Application forms, the schedule of regional competitions, and updated rules for the tournament may be found on the West Virginia Archives and History website at http://www.wvculture.org/history/historybowl.html

Applications must be postmarked three weeks in advance, and the deadline for the first competition is January 10, 2014, so we encourage you to submit your applications as soon as possible.

Students are encouraged to prepare for the competition by utilizing the Archives and History Quick Quizzes at

http://www.wvculture.org/history/trivia/quizindex.aspx

We are very excited about this year’s History Bowl competition and hope your school will choose to participate. If you have questions about the event, contact Debra Basham, tournament director, at 304/558-0230 x702, or by email atdebra.a.basham@wv.gov.

Best wishes,

Rho Kappa -History Honors Society

image008

Is your school interested in fostering a spirit of civic service and a further study of history?

Science, Math, English, and other departments can boast of having honor societies for their disciplines, but long has History had to go without a framework to honor our scholars and share in service- but no longer!  The National Council for Social Studies established Rho Kappa, the first national history honors society in 2011, and since that time over two hundred chapters have sprung up around the nation.  West Virginia has far too few chapters, though, and to help encourage new chapters the Nitronian Chapter of Nitro High is offering to help any interested school establish their own chapter.

Consider if your students wish to join history students across the nation in dedicating themselves to stimulate a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of all the academic disciplines comprising the social studies curriculum; let us know if we can help!  You can also begin the process right away by contacting Jordan Grote at NCSS or using the NCSS website.  At Nitro High we are willing to share our induction ceremony, bylaws, chapter heraldry, membership invitations and certifications, and virtually any other resource you might need.

“Golden Horseshoe” is funny and touching, entertaining and uplifting, exciting for the whole family. If you’re proud of your West Virginia heritage, or if you came from somewhere else but love your new home among the hills, “Golden Horseshoe” will be an evening of laughter and tears, nostalgia and pride.
