WV History Bowl

On behalf of Joe Geiger, WV Archives and History

Dear Educator:

I am writing to inform you that the dates and locations for the 2014 West Virginia History Bowl regional competitions have been set, and to extend an invitation to participate in this exciting event. As most of you know, History Bowl is an academic competition for eighth grade students in West Virginia sponsored by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. Last year, 165 teams from 49 counties competed in the events. Each team is composed of four students, and each school may enter two teams. Eight regional competitions will be held around the state in early 2014, with the first and second place teams in each region advancing to the state tournament, which will be held at the Culture Center in Charleston on April 29, 2014. Application forms, the schedule of regional competitions, and updated rules for the tournament may be found on the West Virginia Archives and History website at http://www.wvculture.org/history/historybowl.html

Applications must be postmarked three weeks in advance, and the deadline for the first competition is January 10, 2014, so we encourage you to submit your applications as soon as possible.

Students are encouraged to prepare for the competition by utilizing the Archives and History Quick Quizzes at

http://www.wvculture.org/history/trivia/quizindex.aspx

We are very excited about this year’s History Bowl competition and hope your school will choose to participate. If you have questions about the event, contact Debra Basham, tournament director, at 304/558-0230 x702, or by email atdebra.a.basham@wv.gov.

Best wishes,

Joseph N. Geiger, Jr., Director
